Overview
In this course, students will walk away with tools and strategies for leveraging different leadership approaches for different situations.
The course employs a “flipped” classroom approach. Learners will be expected to complete self-paced content and activities in advance of interactive live sessions that build on asynchronous coursework with discussion, application exercises, and breakout activities.
The Role of a Leader is the first of three courses in the leadership series hosted by Joelle Kaufman. Check out Joelle’s other two courses, Strategic Leadership and Leadership Execution Excellence.

Designer
Joelle Kaufman is a lifelong student and practitioner of intentional and effective leadership fascinated by the psychology of groups and the effectiveness of different leaders. The first graduate of the University of Michigan LS&A Honors College with a degree in Organizational Studies. After earning her MBA as a Baker Scholar at Harvard, Joelle spent 25 years designing, leading, and optimizing B2B Technology sales, marketing, and customer success teams for scale at companies including Firefly (Microsoft), RSA Security, Reactivity (Cisco), Adify (Cox), Bloomreach, Dynamic Signal (FirstUp), WorkBoard and now GTMFlow (her business).

In this course, students will review the foundations of leadership and apply these learnings to identify their own strengths and weaknesses and help shape their leadership style.
Who Should Enroll
Designed for new leaders and for leaders seeking to improve their skills, the Role of a Leader will provide students with a range of leadership practices and a deeper understanding of your own leadership style, its strengths, and weaknesses.
Why Enroll
There is no magic formula or recipe to being an impactful leader. Much of your success will be determined by the leadership belief and principles you define for yourself. This course will help you identify who you are and how you lead by first taking a look at how different leaders lead.

By the end of this class, you will be able to:
- Identify what beliefs leaders represent and break down common misconceptions about “who leaders are”
- Identify your “leadership archetype”
Session #2
Who Am I as a Leader?
By the end of this class, you will be able to:
- Examine yourself to identify some of your own characteristics and tendencies
- Use what you have learned about yourself to determine how you should grow as a leader
Session #3
How do I Want to Lead?
By the end of this class, you will be able to:
- Conduct a post-mortem that unlocks learnings by identifying what went well and things you would like to change making it safe to take responsibility for choices
- Identify the 7 leadership gaps by Lolly Daskal
- Avoid the common triggers that push individuals into “failure mode”
