This February, we are reminded of the importance of Black History Month – a time to reflect on the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.
Please join us in celebrating and honoring the legacy of Black leaders, past, present, and future. This month, we have an opportunity to deepen our understanding of Black history and celebrate the diversity that enriches our professional community. We can learn from the past and be inspired by the achievements of Black leaders as we work towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
At Pavilion, one of our core values is Diversity Makes Us Better.
Our goal is to use our resources, position, and power of our community to create more equity in the workplace and beyond — so that our members feel safe, supported, and valued inside and outside the workplace.
Our team at Pavilion HQ has compiled a list of resources to help shape and grow our knowledge this Black History Month.
According to McKinsey, in the United States, Black workers account for 15 million, or 12 percent, of the 125 million US private-sector workers, and they are underrepresented in the highest-growth geographies and the highest-paying industries. When it comes to tech jobs, they make up only 8 percent of employees. Us In Technology was founded by Pavilion member, Kendrick Trotter, in effort to change this.
Us in Technology’s mission is to help diversify the tech industry by sourcing qualified, under-represented people to entry-level tech positions.
After being successfully recruited into the tech industry himself in 2017 while moonlighting as an Uber driver, Trotter picked up a successful tech executive and the pair struck up a conversation about his career path that would not only change his professional trajectory but his life mission: to give others the same opportunities he’d been given to succeed in one of the world’s most lucrative career fields. With this in mind, Us in Technology was born.
According to Us In Technology, teams with diversity leadership have 19% higher revenue due to innovation and a 27% greater likelihood of out-performing their peers.
In addition, underrepresented employees are currently 37% more likely to churn in the first year, which costs companies $75,000 on average per employee.
Bridging the gap between hiring companies and qualified underrepresented talent has never been more important.
